Sony Pictures inks deal with Atlas
Producer Charles Roven in multiyear, first-look pact
The announcement was made Monday by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Sony's Columbia Pictures.
Roven, whose "Get Smart" topped the boxoffice this past weekend, is now producing with Atlas partner Richard Suckle "The International" for Columbia. The film, set for a Feb. 20 release, stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts and is directed by Tom Tykwer. Atlas and Columbia also are developing the comedy "Winter's Discontent" from a spec penned by Paul Fruchbom.
"Chuck is an incredibly passionate hands-on producer who has a gift for combining elegant and sophisticated storytelling with a commercial sensibility," Tolmach said. "He is also someone we have known and worked with for many years and are thrilled to be formally reuniting with him and his entire team at Atlas."
The deal reunites Roven with Tolmach and Sony co-chair Amy Pascal, whom he worked with launching Turner Pictures with his late wife Dawn Steel.
Pascal described Roven as "equal parts Renaissance man and business man.
"He is the kind of producer who delivers entertaining and engaging material on time and on budget, and that's a rare commodity these days," Pascal said.
Roven, who was honored as producer of the year at this year's ShoWest, is a co-founder of Atlas, which has produced several tentpoles over the years including "Batman Begins" and the upcoming sequel "The Dark Knight" for Warner Bros. as well as "Get Smart," also for Warners. The company also produces indie films, including "The Bank Job."
The company includes producing partners Alex Gartner, who manages development and production, Suckle and Steve Alexander, a veteran talent agent at CAA who recently came aboard. Atlas executive vp Alan Glazer oversees the day-to-day operations of the production company.
The deal comes as Atlas' parent company Mosaic Media winds down its relationship with producer and manager Jimmy Miller and his Miller Co. Mosaic launched in 1999 as a film and management company that included under its umbrella Atlas, the Miller Co. and Ace Media. Atlas will continue its joint venture with Ace Media's Steven Chasman to produce films and manage talent.
Mosaic has several films awaiting release in 2008, including Sony's "Step Brothers," Universal's "Land of the Lost" and DreamWorks' "She's Out of My League."
"We are in a fortunate position at Atlas to be able to explore many different opportunities," Roven said. "Amy, Matt and I developed a number of great properties at Turner, and I'm very excited to finally have the chance to bring our relationship full circle."
Roven's credits include "Twelve Monkeys," "City of Angels" and "Three Kings."

Comprised of members Kevin Kirkwood (pencil lead vocals), Dallas Perry (guitar), Dalton Humphreys (bass), and Ben Holt (drums), Texas bikers Seven Channels posses a sound that's well-nigh a carbon written matter of such other twenty-first hundred rock music radio set faves as Creed, Puddle of Mudd, and Matchbox Twenty. Bandleader/founder Kirkwood began penning music as a stripling as an way out for the pain he matte up from parents' disunite. Guitarist Perry was the first to fall in up with Kirkwood's unexampled project, and was promptly followed by the others as the new formed quartet set up denounce in Dallas. Seven Channels issued the severally released EP International Wonderful, and began gigging on a regular base -- ahead to being selected as one of the "Top Five Unsigned Bands in America" on VH1's 1999 Rock Across America Tour. The unexampled radical caught a break when they won a contest called "Cease Your Day Job," which resulted in the victor receiving a record deal with the Palm Pictures label. 2001 saw the button of their self-titled major-label debut.
The Honey Drippers
Neil Diamond - Home Before Dark
The set-up remains the same: no big arrangements, just low-key, acoustic songs with Diamond wandering through relationships failed and fulfilled - making the same connection with the listener from either.
If you enjoyed '12 Songs' there'll be nothing here you won't. Opener 'If I Don't See You Again' is the album's masterpiece, and an instant one at that - others take longer to appreciate.
Throughout Diamond sounds like one of those rare-getting-rarer talents for whom age should hold neither fear nor embarrassment. And at its best 'Home Before Dark' recalls the words of Browning: "Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be."

Hardcore punk revivalists AFI (A Fire Inside) originally formed in 1991 when their members -- singer Davey Havok, guitar player Markus Stopholese, bassist Vick, and drummer Adam Carson -- were attending high school in Ukiah, CA. Vick was replaced by Geoff Kresge later on several months, and the band played a few local gigs and released a split 7" coroneted Dork with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change (a band that by the way included future AFI member Jade Puget). An EP titled Behind the Times was released as advantageously. The bandmembers then split up to attend to unlike colleges, with Kresge temporarily moving to New Jersey to bring together Blanks 77, and all sham East Bay's AFI was defunct. However, the band reconvened during a vacation break from school to play a one-off reunion record, and audience response was so positive that the bandmembers decided to take leave school and concentrate on medicine full-time.
A couple of singles preceded a track record deal with the Nitro mark, which issued the band's second gear album, Very Proud of Ya, in 1996. Two LPs followed in 1997 -- a re-release of their 1995 debut, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, and Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes -- and staff office shifts ensued; Kresge was the first to leave, organism replaced by Hunter Burgan, and Stopholese gone in favour of ex-Redemption 87 guitarist Jade Puget, wHO and then divided songwriting duties with Havok. The new batting order recorded an EP titled A Fire Inside in 1998, and issued a observably more than mature full-length in 1999, Black Sails in the Sunset. 1999 too byword the release of the All Hallow's EP before The Art of Drowning followed a year afterward. Though already owning a fiercely patriotic core alkali of fans, the latter album sawing machine the band's medicine organism received by an even bigger audience, due in part to the check success of the individual "Days of the Phoenix."
In the new millenary, AFI hooked up with Jerry Finn and Garbage's Butch Vig for some recording. The end event was the ambitious Sing the Sorrow, released in March 2003, their major-label debut for DreamWorks that showcased the band's substantial increase from their early hardcore years. The platter likewise marked AFI's crossover into the mainstream as their fan radix well grew, national word publications praised them, and several singles establish airplay on MTV. Working over again with producer Jerry Finn (blink-182, Green Day), the band's next record was their most labour-intensive to date, resulting from deuce age of elaborated songwriting. Decemberunderground, album numeral seven-spot, surfaced on June 6, 2006, on Interscope. The album was an instant success, debuting at number unitary on the Billboard charts. AFI kept the impulse expiration on the route nationwide that summertime, followed by a drawing string of oversea dates in October. While on circuit, Havok and Puget dedicated their trim time to a side of meat project that would get Blaqk Audio, which they debuted in early 2007. AFI went on to release I Heard a Voice: Live from Long Beach Arena later on that same year.
